Moving from Shoptet: how to protect your Google rankings
When moving from Shoptet makes sense, what can and cannot be transferred, and a checklist of steps before launch, on launch day and afterwards that helps protect your Google rankings and your orders.
Moving from Shoptet (a Czech and Slovak hosted e-shop platform) to another platform is not risky because of the new platform. It is risky because of the details that get forgotten during the move: old product addresses without redirects, feeds to price comparison sites that stop working, tracking that switches off on launch day. This article is a checklist that helps you move an e-shop while protecting your Google rankings and your orders.
But first, honestly: Shoptet is a good choice for most e-shops and there is no need to change platforms.
When does a move to a custom solution make sense?
A move makes sense when you want to sell in a way that is built directly around your sales: B2B price lists for individual customers, a product configurator with surcharges, a connection to POHODA or Money S3, your own basket or checkout. If you are dealing with none of that, migration will bring you mainly costs and risk.
The signs that a change is worth considering are covered in detail in the article Own or rented platform? One rule from it applies: one sign is not enough, two or more at once are a serious indication.
If your main problem is low traffic or weak product photos, a new platform will not solve it. The money belongs in content and marketing.
What can and cannot be transferred in a migration?
| What | Can it be transferred? | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Products and variants | yes | including codes, prices, parameters and stock |
| Categories | yes | the structure can also be tidied up during the move |
| Images and texts | yes | product and category descriptions, pages, blog |
| Old addresses (URLs) | yes, via 301 redirects | the most important step for SEO |
| Customers | yes, if the platform allows them to be exported | without passwords |
| Order history | yes, if the platform allows it to be exported | the scope is confirmed after analysing the export |
| Customer passwords | no | customers set new ones |
| Add-ons and their settings | no | the features need to be set up in the new system |
When migrating to our platform ECOMMIO, we do the move as a service: products, variants, categories, images, texts and redirects of old addresses. We transfer customers and order history if the export from the original platform allows it. We confirm the exact scope after looking at the export from your e-shop, not by estimating upfront.
Checklist: before launch
- Download a list of all addresses. Products, categories, manufacturers, articles, static pages. The sources are the sitemap, an export from the admin and Search Console data on pages that get traffic.
- Prepare a 301 redirect map. Every old address must lead to the closest new one: product to product, category to category. Not everything to the homepage. Redirect discontinued products to their category.
- Keep titles, descriptions and texts. If a product had a good title and description, it is transferred as it is. Do not make content changes and the migration at the same time, otherwise you will not know what caused any drop.
- Clean up the data. Duplicate products, empty parameters and inconsistent categories do not fix themselves during the move. Now is the best time for it.
- Build the new e-shop on a test address that is blocked for search engines. Otherwise Google will index two identical e-shops.
- Test the whole purchase. Every payment method, every carrier, e-mails to the customer, the invoice, the entry into accounting or stock.
- Prepare the feeds. Heureka, Google Merchant Center, price comparison sites. The new feed addresses have to be entered in every service.
- Prepare tracking. GA4, Meta Pixel, conversions in Google Ads. If nothing is tracked on launch day, you will not be able to compare before and after.
Checklist: on launch day
- Switch the domain over and check that it runs over HTTPS.
- Turn on the redirects and try a random sample of old addresses. Each one must return 301 and end on the right page, not on a 404 error.
- Allow indexing: remove the block from the test version.
- Submit the new sitemap to Google Search Console.
- Place a real order with payment and delivery.
- Check that the feeds load the new addresses and that tracking records both visits and purchases.
Checklist: the first weeks after launch
- Monitor 404 errors every day in Search Console and in the logs. Add every missing address to the redirects.
- Compare search traffic page by page, not just overall. A drop on a specific category usually means a wrong redirect.
- Check internal links in texts and in the blog. Links to old addresses work via the redirect, but it is better to fix them.
- Watch orders and support. Customers who cannot log in need a clear instruction on how to set a new password.
- Expect fluctuations. Short-term ranking fluctuations after a migration are common. If they do not recover after a few weeks, look for the fault in the redirects or in content that disappeared during the move.
What does the move cost?
The price depends on the size of the catalogue, the number of connections and the scope of the data. We price a migration to ECOMMIO by scope, from the Essential package for €2,499 excl. VAT (template adjusted to your brand, up to 200 products, product import or migration), plus a monthly fee according to the plan. A breakdown of what moves the price of an e-shop is in the article What an e-shop costs. We do not promise a deadline blindly: a smaller e-shop can be moved in days, a larger one according to the schedule in the quote. The speed depends most on how quickly the materials and access arrive.
Important for the decision: on ECOMMIO you pay a monthly fee for the platform with no revenue share and no minimum term. We tailor the e-shop to how you sell, and you get support in Slovak from the team that develops the platform.
How do you get started?
Before you decide, measure what state the e-shop is in today. A free website audit (in Slovak) shows speed, SEO and technical problems you would otherwise carry over with you. The free e-shop audit (in Slovak) checks a single product, including from the point of view of data for Google.
If you are considering a move, book a short call. We will show you a demo of the platform and tell you straight whether the move pays off for you, or whether it is better to stay. How we build e-shops is described on the E-shops page.
What people ask us.
Will I lose Google rankings when moving away from Shoptet?
You reduce the risk when every old product and category address leads to the new one via a 301 redirect and you keep the titles, descriptions and content. Short-term fluctuations after launch are common and nobody can guarantee none at all. A lasting drop is usually the result of missing redirects or deleted content.
Can customers and order history be transferred?
We transfer customers and order history if the original platform allows them to be exported. Passwords are not moved; customers set new ones the first time they log in. We confirm the exact scope after analysing the export from your e-shop.
How long does an e-shop migration take?
It depends on the size of the catalogue and on how quickly you provide the materials and access. A smaller e-shop can be moved in days; a larger one with thousands of products and connections to stock or accounting follows the schedule you receive with the quote.
Does a move pay off for every e-shop?
No. If today's features are enough for you, stay. A move makes sense when you want B2B price lists, a configurator or an ERP connection built directly into the e-shop, tailored to how you sell.
How does an e-shop on ECOMMIO work after the move?
The e-shop runs on our ECOMMIO platform for a monthly fee, with no revenue share and no minimum term. We tailor it to how you sell, for example wholesale prices, a configurator or a connection to POHODA or Money S3, and you get support from a Slovak team.
