What AEO Is and Why SEO Alone No Longer Cuts It
AEO is optimization for the answers AI tools give. SEO competes for a spot on a list of links; AEO competes for the model to use your content as the source of its answer — and almost no one is doing the second part yet.
AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is the work of shaping your site and content so a language model uses you as a source when it assembles an answer for someone. SEO competes for a position in a list of ten blue links. AEO competes for ChatGPT, Perplexity or Gemini to mention you directly in the answer the user gets instead of that list. The two overlap, but they are not the same thing — and that second part is still missing for almost everyone.
The difference is what counts as the result. With SEO, the result is a click to your site. With AEO, the result may be that the model recommends you even though the user never visits your site at all. It sounds uncomfortable, but it is the new reality: a share of people now decide before they open the first link.
How a model picks its sources
A language model does not read the web the way a human does, and it does not rank it the way Google does. When it assembles an answer, it pulls from two places: what it learned during training, and what it looks up on the web in that moment (tools like Perplexity, or ChatGPT with search, do this).
You cannot get into the training set on demand and you have no control over it. The second layer — what the model finds right now — is where you have influence. And there, what matters is whether your content answers the question directly, whether it is easy to extract and quote, and whether you come across as a trustworthy source.
Put simply: the model is looking for a passage it can take almost verbatim as the answer. Given a choice between your text, where the answer is buried under five paragraphs of marketing, and a competitor’s text where the answer is in the first sentence, it takes the competitor.
What to change on your site
The first change is how you write. The answer to a question belongs at the start, not the end. The heading should be a question your customer would ask, with a direct answer right underneath it. The rest of the text expands on it. This article is written exactly that way.
The second change is structure a machine can parse. Structured data (schema.org), meaningful headings, questions and answers in a form that can be read programmatically. This is not an extra trick — it is translating your content into a form the model can reliably break apart.
The third change is credibility. Concrete numbers instead of vague claims, a named author, a date, things that can be verified. The model favours sources that read like fact, not like an ad.
What has not changed: quality content is still the foundation. AEO is not a substitute for actually having something to say. It is a way of saying it so it also survives the machine.
How it is measured
This is the least comfortable part, so we will not dodge it: it is measured worse than SEO. With Google you have positions, clicks, exact numbers. With AI answers there is no official “ranking” to read your position off.
What you can do is test. You build a set of questions your customers actually ask, put them to the main tools, and track how often and in what context you show up versus the competition. It is not a single number, it is repeated measurement that shows a trend.
On top of that, model answers change — the same query may return a different output today than a month from now. That is why AEO is not measured once but on an ongoing basis — for us, typically once a month.
What does not work
Keyword stuffing. It has not worked for Google in a decade, and with a language model it is even more pointless — the model understands meaning, not word density.
A one-time edit and done. AEO is not a switch. It is ongoing work with content, because the models update and the competition does not stand still either.
The promise that “we will get you to the number one spot in ChatGPT.” There is no number one spot, and no one has a lever on exactly what the model will say. Anyone promising it is selling a certainty they do not have.
And finally: AEO instead of SEO. Classic search has not gone away and still brings most companies most of their visitors. AEO is an extra layer for a channel that is growing — not a trade for the one that works today.
So the honest answer to the question in the heading is this: SEO alone is not enough because it only serves one of the two ways people search today. The other is still served by very few — which is exactly why it is worth getting into sooner rather than later.
