The most used social networks in Slovakia, and what the numbers mean

Slovakia has 3.9 million social media accounts. Facebook reaches half the population, TikTok grows fastest — and still sends fewer than one click in a thousand to websites. The numbers, and why they contradict each other.

A row of people, each looking at their own phone

When a company decides which social network to be on, it usually searches for user counts and picks accordingly. That is logical, and it is a mistake, because there are two different rankings and they say different things.

The first is about where people have accounts. The second is about where people actually click through to websites. Both are below, along with why they disagree.

Where the people are

The figures come from the Digital 2026: Slovakia report (DataReportal, Kepios and Meltwater), with a reference date of October 2025.

Slovakia has 5.47 million inhabitants. Of those, 5.02 million use the internet (91.8%) and 3.90 million hold an account on some social network (71.4% of the population). The total number of accounts fell by 2% year on year.

Platform Reach % of population Year on year
YouTube 3.90 m 71.4% −2.0%
Facebook 2.60 m 47.6% −3.7%
Messenger 2.20 m 40.3% −4.3%
Instagram 1.75 m 32.0% +6.1%
TikTok 1.15 m (18+) 25.9% of adults +15.1%
LinkedIn 1.10 m 20.1% +17.0%
Pinterest 950 k 17.4% +1.6%
Reddit 872 k 16.0% +166%
Snapchat 675 k 12.4% +9.8%
X (Twitter) 322 k 5.9% −13.5%

Three things worth noting:

Facebook is declining, but it is still twice the size of Instagram. Talk of Facebook being dead is a decade premature in Slovakia. Half the country is there.

LinkedIn and TikTok grow fastest (+17% and +15%). For B2B companies the LinkedIn figure matters: a million Slovaks is a usable audience, not a niche.

Reddit jumped 166%. On small numbers that looks more dramatic than it is, but it connects to something important: Reddit is one of the main sources language models draw on when assembling answers.

How to read these numbers

These counts are not counts of people. They are the figures platforms themselves report as advertising reach in their own tools. Which means:

  • one person with two accounts is counted twice,
  • inactive and fake accounts are usually counted as well,
  • platforms have a commercial reason for the number to be on the high side.

YouTube shows this best: its reach (3.90 m) is exactly equal to the total number of social accounts in the country. That is not an observation of reality, it is the ceiling of the methodology.

Treat these as ranking and order of magnitude, not as a census. For decision-making that is enough.

Where the clicks actually come from

The second ranking measures something else: when a visitor arrives at a website from a social network, which network they came from. The source is StatCounter GlobalStats, July 2026, Slovakia.

Platform Share of visits from social networks
Facebook 91.1%
Instagram 3.6%
Pinterest 1.6%
YouTube 1.1%
LinkedIn 0.9%
Reddit 0.8%
X (Twitter) 0.8%
TikTok under 0.1%

Facebook holds this share consistently. Over the past year it ranged between 86% and 93% and never dropped below 86%.

And here is the point: TikTok has over a million users in Slovakia and sends fewer than one click in a thousand to websites.

Why the two rankings contradict each other

This is not a measurement error. It is the difference between where people spend time and where they leave from.

TikTok, Instagram and YouTube are built to keep you inside. A link is an irritant there, the algorithm does not push it, and the user does not tap it because they would lose their feed. Facebook is the oldest of this generation and still works partly as a signpost: links get shared and clicked.

So user counts do not predict website traffic. They predict reach, which can turn into awareness, into in-app sales or into enquiries by message, but not into a visit to your website.

⚠️ StatCounter has its own limitation: it measures visits to sites carrying its script, so a sample rather than the whole internet. And it only sees exits to websites, not what happens inside an app.

What this means for a company

Decide first what you want from the network. There are three answers and each leads somewhere different:

  1. I want website traffic. In Slovakia that means Facebook, and possibly Pinterest if you sell something visual. Budget spent on TikTok with a “more website visits” goal is wasted.
  2. I want awareness and reach. Here TikTok and Instagram make sense and their growth is an argument. Just do not measure it in traffic, because you will not see any.
  3. I want B2B contacts. LinkedIn: a million people, fastest growth in the table. It will not shine on website traffic either.

Do not be everywhere. Five half-dead profiles look worse than one alive. An empty company profile whose last post is two years old is a signal customers read correctly.

Do not build on someone else’s land. Reach on a social network is not portable and its owner changes the rules without you. What you actually own is your website and your contact database. A social network should be a route to them, not a replacement. How to turn that into a measurable flow is covered under performance marketing.
